Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation refers to areas of skin that appear darker than the surrounding skin because of increased or uneven melanin production.

It can occur for many reasons, including sun exposure, inflammation, hormonal changes, acne, skin injury and certain medications or underlying conditions.

This is why treating pigmentation effectively begins with understanding why the pigmentation developed in the first place.

Not all pigmentation is the same.

Dark marks following acne or inflammation are different from pigmentation associated with hormonal changes, and both may require different approaches.

Trying to “bleach” pigmentation away without addressing its cause can lead to irritation and further inflammation.

What should you look for?

Depending on the type and cause of pigmentation, professional skincare may include ingredients such as:

Vitamin C
An antioxidant that can support brighter, more even-looking skin.

Niacinamide
Can help support the skin barrier and improve the appearance of uneven skin tone.

Retinoids
Can support cell turnover and are used in the management of several pigmentation concerns.

AHAs and other exfoliating ingredients
Can help improve the appearance of uneven tone and texture when appropriately selected.

Pigment-regulating ingredients
Certain professional formulations target pathways involved in melanin production and transfer.

Sun protection is non-negotiable.

No pigmentation routine can be considered complete without consistent UV protection.

UV exposure can contribute to pigmentation and can make existing pigmentation more difficult to manage. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is therefore an essential part of both treatment and maintenance.

Our professional recommendation

Pigmentation requires patience and consistency. The goal should not be to aggressively strip or lighten the skin, but to gradually improve uneven pigmentation while keeping the skin healthy and supported.

If you have been prescribed or recommended a particular professional skincare system, stay within that range unless your skincare professional advises otherwise.

Every professional brand has its own formulation technology, delivery systems and combination of active ingredients. If Resthor is the range recommended for your skin and it fits your budget, you can achieve a structured routine without feeling that you need to purchase multiple expensive brands.

If your pigmentation is new, rapidly changing, unusual or persistent, seek assessment from an appropriate healthcare professional.

Healthy, even-looking skin is built through protection, correction and consistency.
